Insurance industry as a partner for sustainable development

The insurance industry, due to its intermediary role significantly influences the state of the environment and the quality of living of the social community it operates in. So, the concept of sustainable development brings numerous challenges and opportunities to insurance companies. The paper points out the importance of the insurance industry in redirecting the business and overall community toward patterns of sustainable production and sustainable consumption. Namely, many insurance companies all over the world have recognised the advantages of the commitment to sustainable development and the integration of environmental topics into their business strategy. The aim of the paper was to study the commitment, attitudes and practical experience of environmental management in the insurance industry in Croatia. The research has indicated that managers are environmentally conscious, but two thirds of them do not have sufficient and adequate practice. The rest, although they have the appropriate knowledge, do not apply it in their business practice. He corporate social responsibility is still very low, periodically limited to donations and sponsorships toward NGOs.
