Evaluation of sensibility of teeth involved in the mandibular fracture line
Although it is known from clinical experience that teeth involved in the mandibular fracture line can have disturbed sensibility and/or vitality, their reinnervation and possible devitalization has not been discussed in literature. The purpose of this investigation was to find out the reinnervation period, the number of denervated and devitalized teeth and their clinical importance. Thirty nine patients were examined, 84 teeth involved in fracture line were tested, 48 out of which were initially "avital". A year after the injury 81, 3% initially "avital" involved teeth were reinnervated. In the second and the third year after the injury no reinnervation occurred. Total of 3/48 initially "avital" teeth were devitalized in the three-year period after the injury. One tooth was devitalized one month after the injury. In 2/10 denervated teeth i.e. 2/48 initially "avital" teeth the devitalization appeared in the second and the third year after the injury. Results of this investigation show that the pulp is stabil a year after the injury. Denervated tooth should not be treated and even less extracted, if there are no clinical or radiologic signs of devitalization.
