An example of scaling between different aggregation levels in combat modelling

RAND Corporation's Joint Integrated Contingency Model (JICM) is an aggregated combat model that represents conflicts between units of division and brigade size, grouped into commands of corps size. This paper describes modification of JICM, and Situational Force Scoring (SFS) - JICM's combat adjudication methodology - to conditions of lower intensity conflict ; i.e. conflict between smaller and lighter units of battalion/brigade size. Although it can be argued that combat is a phenomenon partially self-similar on different scales, its complexity and non-linearity prevents scaling to be done in trivially linear way. For that reason, analysis of the original model structure and parameters has been performed in order to assess its suitability for modeling lower-echelons, lighter forces and less intense conflicts. The most critical issues are identified and the appropriate adaptations to the model that will suit the new requirements are proposed. Analysis shows that the adaptation is possible.
