Suitability of Long Pruning System for Table Grape Production in the Agro-Ecological Conditions of Istria, Croatia

The aim of this investigation was to confirm the influence of long cutting on the production parameters of table grapes varieties in the agro ecological conditions in Istria region, Croatia. For the purpose of this investigation the experiment has been set in the experimental vineyard of table grapes varieties at the Institute for Agriculture and Tourism in Porec. The vineyard has been established in 1997 and 1998 on the 1103 P rootstock. Plant density is 2, 5 x 2, 5 m spacing between wines, or 1600 vines per hectare, respectively. There is a total of 17 table grape varieties and clones in the experimental vineyard. The following varieties have been investigated: Alphonse Lavallée, Beauty seedless, Cardinal, Italia, Perlette, Perlon, Ruby Seedless and Sublima seedless, like the most suitable table grape varieties for the agro ecological conditions in Istria region. To evaluate the suitability of the pruning type, the following parameters have been evaluated: yield per vine and hectare, average weight of bunch and number of bunches per vine. With respect to the obtained results, the recommended varieties for the Istrian vine-growing region are Perlette, Sublima Seedless and Italia. The determining factor in the choice of these varieties was their time of ripening (1. to 30. August), since in that period there is an increased demand for fresh grape by the summer tourist market.
