Mitochondrial control region of Lacertidae (Reptilia) - structural organization and sequence variation.

The complete mitochondrial control region (CR) was sequenced for one representative of three lacertid species: Podarcis sicula, Podarcis muralis and Lacerta kulzeri, each. The sequences are 1844, 1872 and 1810 bp long, respectively. They are compared with the previously published complete CR sequence of Lacerta dugesii. Several motifs conserved among vertebrates including three conserved sequence blocks (CSB-1, CSB-2 and CSB-3), and extended termination associated sequences ETAS1 and ETAS2 have been identified. Three regions can be delimited. The variable 5' portion (ETAS domain) includes a series of short tandem repeats (each containing a hairpin-like structural element) and both ETAS sequences. The central region extending from some 70 bp upstream of the ETAS2 up to the CSB-1 block is highly conserved with the exception of three short variable stretches. The 3' variable domain (CSB domain), along with CSB-1 block, comprises a 155 bp long conserved segment encompassing CSB-2 and CSB-3 blocks. The CR sequence variability (excluding the 5' tandem repeats) between two analysed Podarcis species is strikingly low (2.8 times lower than in cytochrome b and 1.2 times lower than in 12S rRNA gene). The intergeneric variability of the corresponding fragment is higher than in 12S rRNA, but lower than in cytochrome b gene.
