Grape and Wine Quality of Istrian Malvasia on Different Training Systems

The adequate selection of training system, combined with particular parameters such as bud load, canopy management, planting distance, etc., play an important role in grape yield and quality. In order to resolve this technology task, at the beginning of 1990 it was set the experiment of different training systems in the experimental vineyard of the Institute of Agriculture and Tourism. Along with Istrian Malvasia grafted on 420A rootstock, analogously Chardonnay R-8 grafted on 420A rootstock and Cabernet Sauvignon R-5 grafted on SO4 rootstock have been tested. Training systems are as follows: (1) Cordon de Royat (CR) with planting distance 90x100cm (11.111 vines/ha) ; (2) IstriaC (IC) with planting distance 90x100cm (11.111 vines/ha) ; (3) Cordon de Royat with planting distance 180x100cm (5.555 vines/ha) ; (4) Cordon de Royat with planting distance 180x200cm (2.778 vines/ha) ; (5) Niof Casarsa (NC) with planting distance 180x100cm (5.555 vines/ha) ; (6) Spalliera Cortina Semplice Libera (SCSL) with planting distance 180x100cm (5.555) vines/ha ; (7) Cordon de Royat with planting distance 270x100cm (3.703 vines/ha) ; (8) Guyot (GU) with planting distance 270x100cm (3.703 vines/ha) ; (9) Lyre ouverte (LYO) with planting distance 360x100cm (2.778 vines/ha) ; (10) Lyre ouverte (LYO) with planting distance 360x50cm (5.555 vines/ha) ; (11) Lyre R9C (LYR9C) with planting distance 360x50cm (5.555 vines/ha) ; (12) Filari Binati (FBCR) type Cordon de Royat. The rows (Cordon de Royat) are double with distance of 120cm (distance beetwen double rows are 360cm) (5.555 vines/ha) ; (13) R9C type “ Cordone Speronato di Conegliano” (CSC) with planting distance: 360x50cm (5.555 vines/ha) ; (14) Spalliera Cortina Doppia Libera (SCDL) with planting distance 360x100 cm (2.778 vines/ha) ; (15) Spalliera Cortina Doppia Libera (SCDL) with planting distance 360x50 cm (5.555 vines/ha). On the base of the first research results (Cargnello G., Peršurić Đ., Dragan P., 1999), for continued experimental work were selected next thesis: (1) Cordon de Royat (CR) with planting distance 0, 90x1, 00m (11.111 vines/ha) and trunk 60cm high ; (6) Spaliera cortina semplice libera (SCSL) with planting distance 1, 80x1, 00m (5.555 vines/ha) ; (8) Guyot with planting distance 2, 70x1, 00m (3.703 vines/ha) and trunk 90cm high ; (9) Lyra ouverte with planting distance 3, 60x1, 00m (2.778 vines/ha) and trunk 70cm high ; (12) Double rows (FB) with planting distance 3, 60x1, 00m (2.137 vines/ha) with “ pair” planting system (two wines on one plant site), with spur cutting system and trunk 60 cm high ; (14) Spaliera cortina dopia libera (SCDL), with planting distance 3, 60x1, 00 m (2.778 vines/ha) and trunk 160cm high. Productive parameters (yield/vine, yield/hectare, number of cluster and average cluster weight) and quality parameters (soluble solids, titratable acidity and pH value) were measured for each growing system. In this paper results for six years period, from 1999 to 2004 are presented. The elementary chemical analysis was performed for each wine and the quality of wine was tested by sensorial analysis. The results of this research demonstrated the importance of adequate choice of growing system for Istrian Malvasia as a tool for obtaining satisfactory quality and productive level. But, this suitable level is in strong correlation with climatic conditions of a particular year.
