The cult of Neptune and Venus on Brijuni

The area of temples on maritime villa at Verige bay on Brijuni islands, Istria, Croatia comprises three temples positioned in a semicircle, connected at the outer side by a semicircular portico, while their fronts are turned towards the sea. The southern temple is attributed to Neptune with certainly. The numerous elements of decoratio were found - fragments of architrave and friese with Triton, hippocamp and dolphin, a relief of Triton with flute and shell, capital with a trident inserted between the acanthus leaves, a fragment of relief of fish and shells, sculpture of the dolphins which adore the middle part of the coffered ceiling - all containing attributes of that deity used in various ways. The northern temple, following the finding of the statue of Aphrodite of Cnidus, is attributed to Venus, while the attribution of the middle temple is uncertain. Apart from the richly ornamented acrotere there were no other findings on this site that would enable a reliable attribution. All temples are dated according to the finding of the coin of the Emperor Claudius in the plaster of the wall of the diaeta alongside the temple of Venus.
