Increasing the Penetration of Renewable Energy by Merging Energy and Water Supply Systems: case study Corvo Island, Azores
With respect to energy supply, most of the islands depend on importation, mainly from oil and its related products, and others are dependent on weak electricity grid connections with mainland. Some are trying to become renewable islands, satisfying their energy demand mainly or entirely from indigenous and renewable sources. Since most available renewable energy sources are intermittent, energy storage has to be devised. On the other hand in many places there is already an excellent storage potential in the local water supply system. By merging the energy and water supply systems, where there is sufficient elevation difference, it is possible to use reversible hydro in order to increase the penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources, as for example wind, even in cases where there is not much hydro potential. The paper shows a model of such wind-reversible hydro-water supply energy systems applied on Island of Corvo, Azores, Portugal, by using H2RES model. The results have shown that 85-90% renewable penetration is feasible.
