GENETIC GAIN AND SELECTION CRITERIA EFFECTS ON YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS IN BARLEY (HORDEUM VULGARE L.)

The objective of this study was to assess variability, heritability, phenotypic and genotypic correlations and the selection method effects on grain yield and grain yield components in winter barley cross Timura*Osk.4.208/2-84. For the trial we grown 150 lines of F4 generation derived by single seed descent method (SSD) and 26 lines of F4 generation derived by pedigree method. Genetic gain estimates show that pedigree method of selection is the most efficient method in barley breeding for shorter stem, higher productive tillering, single grain weight and grain number per plant. On the other side by single seed descent method there were genotypes superior in less heritable traits such as grain yield per plant. By the selection of 10 % of the most high-yielding lines, as compared to the better parent, stem height was increased by 3, 93 % and harvest index by 5, 29 % while for the other traits values remained at the level of better parent. Direct genetic gain for grain yield was 33, 00 % while indirect genetic gain varied from -18, 99 % to 21, 71 % depending on the applied selection criteria. The study performed below indicated that the highest efficiency in grain yield improvement was accomplished by “ Q” index multi-trait selection approach. By such a mode of selection, the intensity of selection could be directed to a certain traits but it should be followed by balanced trait correlations because unfavorable trait correlations are often a source of gain losses for grain yield.
