Population structure of the (Sub)populations from the Island of Krk (Croatia). Genetic variation, geography, migration and language
The 12th International Histocompatibility Workshop HLA Class I kit was used to determine allele frequencies at HLA-A, B and C loci in 176 autochtonous individuals from seven villages located at the island of Krk, Croatia. Genetic kinship (R) and distance (E2 and D) were computed. Neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree was constructed and compared to the phylogenetic tress based on classical polymorphisms and HLA Class II data. Log-linear analysis was employed to examine the relationship between genetic, geographic, migration and linguistic data. The obtained results stress the significance of socio-cultural events and ethnohistorical processes as the primary determinants of today's population structure of the island.
