Scientific project “ Prevention of behavior disorders in local community” : Lessons learned from working on the field

Scientific project “ Prevention of behavior disorders in local community” is conducted by Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences of the University of Zagreb (principal investigator: Josipa Basic, Ph.D.) and Administrative Department of Health Care, Social Welfare and Work of the Region of Istria, Croatia. Main aim of project is finding the model that would simultaneously be described thought positive development of young person, strengthening families, schools, and caring communities, as well as promote health, education and protection. The project involves both, research and action part. Research part was carried through conducted research in preschools, elementary and secondary schools and some institutions in the local community (children, parents, teachers and key people). The attention of this presentation is to describe the action part more closely. The action part pertains to community development and planning the successful prevention strategy. For this purpose, the group of coordinators from every local community that were involved in the project (12) was formed. The action part of the project started by working with that group for one year. The meetings were held every two months (first year 4 meetings) during two days. Themes of the meetings were: vision/mission of the group, strategically planning, prevention research and practice, concept of youth development, successful prevention programs, and comprehensive prevention programs. The second year of the action part began with establishing Center for prevention practice. During the second year, besides the group of coordinators, three expert teams were formed (team for epidemiology, team for the program and resource assessment and team for evaluation). The idea of forming those expert teams was (1) to involve as many professionals from every local community as possible and (2) to educate and train those professionals to become experts in the filed of organizing local community for prevention. Until now, the project went over the phase of community readiness and mobilization, needs and resource assessment. The prioritizing and focusing efforts as well as finding and developing best practices are phases that yet have to be done. All those efforts would lead to development and implementation of the local community prevention model.
