Genetic relationships among maize inbred lines revealed by SSR markers
Inbred lines developed from domestic germplasm have had positive effect on widening the genetic basis of Bc hybrids and significantly contributed to their performance. Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) molecular markers have been proposed as suitable for studying genetic relationship among maize inbred lines. The objectives of this study were to 1) determine the level of polymorphism at 23 SSR loci among six inbred lines developed from domestic germplasm and inbred lines Mo17 and B73 representing Lancaster Sure Crop and Iowa Stiff Stalk Synthetic, respectively, and 2) estimate genetic similarity among these eight inbred lines. Mean number of alleles per locus was 2.8. Genetic similarities among lines, estimated from SSR data as Dice similarity index, ranged from 0.17 to 0.91. All inbred lines developed from domestic germplasm, except one, were more related to Mo17 than to B73, which was in agreement with pedigree data.
