The occurence and distribution of sugarbeet rhizomania in Croatia

One of the sugarbeet viruses that can cause great economic damages is BNYVV, responsible for necrotic yellowing of the sugarbeet veins, known as rhizomania or beard-like appearance of the sugarbeet root. Strong attacks can reduce root yield by over 50% and sugar content by 3- 4%. In addition there is a significant reduction in technological quality of beet root not only due to waste impurities but also due to a significant increase of nitrate nitrogen in the root and an increase in the alkaline coefficient in the actual processing technology. The newly developed leaves have longer stems than healthy ones, they are a lighter in colour with vein necrosis. In our climate the symptoms on leaves are rare and may disappear so the disease's characteristic symptom "beardlike" is more appropriate as a name. There are noticeable changes on the root. Numerous root hairs develop and the root gets a "beard", with necroses that are visible on the cross section. A fungus-like organism Polymyxa betae is this virus' vector. In Croatia rhizomania was first determined in 1979 at location Seleš. The infection was later determined at locations: Županja, Privlaka- Otok, Tovarnik, Gradišce and Cakovec. Similar changes on sugarbeet can develop under the influence of environmental factors, so qualified identification of the pathogen is necessary. We checked sugarbeet yield in major growing regions (Virovitica, Županja, Osijek) and took root samples for analyses. The analyses were performed using the ELISA-test. Some of the positive samples were checked by PCR. At some locations we also checked virus presence in the soil, which has practical value because in that case BNYVV can be verified even before sowing-time.
