Survey of personal and social adjustment of students in lower primary school grades

Knowing the personal and social adjustment is an important indicator and guidance in creating programmes of work with students, parents, teachers and an early identification of difficulties provides better possibilities for an intervention. The objective of the study was to discover the frequency and characteristics of difficulties children face in their personal and socila adjustment in the family, at school and in the sphere of interpersonal relations with peers. On the basis of the Behaviour Rating Profile II battery of instruments, children made a self -rating of their adjustment in the family, at school and among peers. Adaptation in the family was rated by parents and adaptation at school by teachers. Sociometry has shown the acceptance of children among peers. The sample formed for this study consisted of 153 primary school students from Požega, of both genders and going to lower grades, i.e.grades 2, 3 or 4. The results of the study indicate that it is necessary to join together the data obtained from different evaluators. The frequency of difficulties in personal and social adjustment in one or several areas (family, school, peers), as well as the identified characteristics, provide guidelines for planning individual and group programmes for working with students, their teachers and parents and point to the need for an active participation of all these subjetcs in achieving a successful adjustment.
