Pre-Harvest Sprouting Resistance in Croatian Winter Wheat Cultivars
Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) in wheat can lower the baking quality of flour. Field experiments were conducted to assess the level of PHS resistance in different winter wheat genotypes including several cultivars widely used for commercial production in Croatia. Specific objectives were to (i) compare germination test performed using threshed grains and intact spikes and (ii) determine the potential inhibitive effect of wheat bracts on germination. Twenty-four winter wheat cultivars and experimental lines, together with the pre-harvest sprouting resistant control RL.4137, were evaluated at Zagreb and Osijek, Croatia, in 2004. Pre-harvest sprouting resistance measured at harvest maturity (HM) and post harvest maturity (PHM) varied widely among wheat genotypes. Mean germination percentage of threshed grains in water was 25 and 42% at HM and PHM, respectively. In test with intact spikes germination percentages were about 50% of the germination percentages observed in tests with threshed grains. The number of genotypes identified as resistant in intact spike tests was much higher than in tests with threshed grains, indicating the importance of the vegetative structures of the ear in enhancing sprouting resistance in the investigated set of genotypes. Germination percentages of threshed grains germinated in water extract of their own bracts were of the same magnitude as germination percentages observed in the intact spike tests. Significant differences were found among genotypes in the inhibitive effect of their bract extracts on germination of partially dormant grains of the cultivar Kuna. A larger number of genotypes were ranked similar to RL.4137 at HM than at PHM for all three tests. Wheat cultivars with prolonged PHS resistance should be recommended for commercial production in rainy regions where a higher risk of PHS damage is expected.
