Study of shrinkage cavity occurance in AlSi9Cu3 high pressure die casting
The shrinkage cavity occurrence on the bracket of alternating current generator was examined. The shrinkage cavity is occurring on the hot spot place as a result of insufficient feeding. This kind of defect can cause unsoundness and rejection of castings. Metallographic analysis, X-ray analysis as well as solidification and porosity simulation were provided. Mechanical properties examination does not show any deviation from the required values. Metallographic and X– ray analyses results verified simulation accuracy. MAGMASoft software justifies its industry application for the preliminary analysis of technological process correctness, as well as prediction of defects occurring. The shrinkage cavity can be removed with the change of casting and tool construction, which is related with the big expenses. An alternative mechanism, with respect to the present complex casting and tool geometry, implicates mass feeding in the moment when the liquid is in a mushy state. This became the theoretical base for the squeezing process for shrinkage cavity elimination.
