PROCALCITONIN AND C-REACTIVE PROTEIN AS A MARKER OF INFECTION IN CRITICALLY ILL PATIENTS
PCT confirmes widespread bacterial infections much earlier than other inflammatory markers and serves for the proper use of antibiotic therapy. In the infected patients, higher levels of PCT are associated with the poorer prognosis of survival. The addition of PCT measurements in the standard protocol of critically ill patients with the suspected infection, could increase diagnostic certinity, generate an improved patient management, and estimate their outcome.
