The fundamental role of metonymy in cognition, meaning, communication and form
The author surveys the ubiquity of metonymy in thought and language. It is shown that metonymy can motiate metaphors, lexical senses, phonological and grammatical structures. Metonymy is also argued to be involved in indirect speech acts and conversational implicatures. It is concluded that metonymy is more basic than metaphor and at least as ubiquitous.
