Numerical Simulation of Valve Train Dynamics
In this paper the dynamic behaviour of a single OHC valve train is investigated. A parametric mechanical model has been built and numerically solved for different camshaft speeds covering the operational range of the engine. The results of the simulation are graphically presented. The parameter values are chosen to represent an automotive high speed engine, giving the possibility of coil clash and valve float. Special attention is paid to spring resonance. In extreme cases, resonance can lead to severe oscillation that may cause poor engine performance as well as structural damage of valve train components. In order to investigate that important phenomenon, spectral analysis of the excitation and response is performed. The response spectra are interpreted and compared to expected results based on simple analytical considerations.
