Limbal graft and/or amniotic membrane transplantation in the treatment of ocular burns
Limbal stem cells transplantation (LSCT) and amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) may improve corneal recovery after chemical burn. In five eyes amniotic membrane (AM) was applied as patch, in six eyes LSCT from healthy contralateral eye was performed and in four eyes combination of these techniques has been performed. No complications were observed during surgical procedure. The epithelisation was completed after two weeks in patients with LSCT and after 3 weeks in AM group. Visual acuity has approved in all patients. No complication was observed either on donor or recipient eye during follow up period that was longer than 13 months in all groups. AM is effective in promoting re-epithelisation and reducing inflammation when applied alone in patients with 3 to 6 hours limbal involvement as well as combined with LSCT in patients with more than 6 hours limbal ischaemia. LSCT is an effective procedure for rehabilitation after severe chemical eye trauma with more than 50% limbal involvement.
