Toward Low NOx Hydrogen Fueled Internal Combustion Engine
Nitric oxides (NOx) are the main pollutants from hydrogen fueled internal combustion engine. With appropriate engine design and process management, NOx formation will be reduced to the source and environmental protection regulations will be met without expensive exhaust gas aftertreatment. The paper presents a numerical analysis of a hydrogen fueled spark ignition 4 cylinders inline engine. The analysis was performed using a phenomenological model for mixture preparation and combustion with detailed N-H-O chemistry. Lean burn concepts are analyzed, using mixture stratification. To increase the engine mean effective pressure, various supercharging levels have been analysed. The results of the analysis indicate the possibility of keeping the engine NOx emission levels under 3 g/kWh. In this sense the engine power droped up to 40% when compared with the same gasoline fueled engine.
