The ferns (Pteridophyta) of Medvednica Nature Park, Croatia

Background and purpose As part of the study into the flora of the Medvednica Nature Park, the distribution of the fern taxa on mount Medvednica has been studied and distribution maps were elaborated. Materials and methods The data on fern taxa distribution within the Nature Park was collected from three sources: field observation, literature and herbaria. All the data from the field lists, literature and herbaria was recorded in the CROFlora 2.0 database (22), and was used for drawing distribution maps by applying Arc View 3.1 tool. It was checked which fern species were rare or most widespread, and which ones were threatened on the national level. Results and conclusion Floristic mapping of the Medvednica Nature Park established 28 fern species. Other sources mention 9 more species. Fern species which were not confirmed in our field research are: Adiantum capillus veneris, Asplenium septentrionale, Botrichium lunaria, Botrichium matricariifolium, Diphasiastrum complanatum, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Gymnocarpium robertianum, Notholaena marantae and Ophioglossum vulgatum. Most of the literature and herbaria data (45.91 %) are over 50 years old. Because of the imprecise locality citations only 76.09 % of the herbaria data and 53.09 % of the data items originating from literature were geocoded. Field investigations showed that the most widespread species in the researched area is Pteridium aquilinum. The rare species for the Medvednica Nature Park recorded in only one or two quadrants, are: Asplenium trichomanes-ramosum, Blechnum spicant, Dryopteris affinis, Equisetum palustre, Oreopteris limbosperma, Phegopteris connectilis and Polypodium x mantoniae. The reasons for high or low frequency of the mentioned species in the research area are mostly ecological. Only the species Botrichium matricariifolium, which was not confirmed by field observations, has the threat degree: regionally extinct (RE).
