The Analysis of PV Power Supply Availability Using the Referent Year Data

End users at the extremities of optical transmission cables in telephone communication need an affordable and available power supply. The modernization of telephone transmission lines point to the importance of this topic, especially in remote areas with electric main failures during storms, snow and strong winds. The paper presents an analysis of an isolated power supply with a constant load of 55 W. The PV power supply unit consist of PV panels, controller, voltage converter and lead batteries. The analysis is performed using the referent year data for solar radiation, ambient temperature and wind intensity which are derived as a compilation of weather data during a decade. Based on the mathematical description of the PV power supply, the computer program is used to perform the analysis. The presented analysis is based on the weather data, panel orientation and characteristics of the system components. Various strategies of the power supply availability are analyzed. It is shown that the winter period is the most critical time to determine the system size. Using the optimized combination of the panel inclination, panel size and system autonomy, the lowest energy cost can be maintained at the level of 0.8 US$/kWh for the market price conditions in the year 1997 and the weather conditions in the northern Adriatic area.
