Modulation of electron density in high-pressure Na-Hg and Na-Cd discharges
Spectra from the high-pressure sodium-cadmium and sodium-mercury discharges generated in PCA burner have been measured under various loads in order to compare two similar alkali-based discharges. The temperatures are determined by Bartels' method and the electron densities are determined by a refined Inglis-Teller method. Density of neutral particles has been determined using equations relating the interaction constants for sodium-sodium and sodium-cadmium (or sodium-mercury) quasimolecule to the shift of the self-absorbed peaks of the sodium resonance line, assuming that the main line-broadening mechanisms are resonance broadening and van der Waals broadening.
