Influence of weapon barrel superheat on structure and hardness of material

The paper presents the procedures and the results of the experiment which researches the influence of weapon barrel superheat on the structure and hardness of barrel material. The superheat of weapon barrel appears when the allowed rate of fire is crossed. The surface layers of the barrel bore may be heated over the temperature of 500 C to 1000  C for that. Therefore the samples of the chosen artillery weapon barrel were made. The samples were tempering at 600  C, 700  C, 800  C, 900  C and 1000  C, over a period of one hour and air cooling. The paper presents the procedures and results of the samples metallographic analysis and the results of the measured hardness of the samples after tempering and cooling. The results of experiment shown in this paper can contribute to the conclusion about wear resistance change therefore the weapon barrel superheat by the firing process.
