Reading authentic books in English as a foreign langage with seventh-graders
The thesis reports on a piece of research on reading authentic literature with seventh-graders. The sample consisted of 114 seventh-graders from Zagreb schools. The participants were given a book in English to read, and they evaluated their reading experiences by means of a set of questionnaires. The results have shown that there is a strong desire among the majority of the population to read authentic books in English, but some problems also emerge, one of them being the discrepancy of the linguistic and thematic appropriateness of the chosen material for the given age group. Appropriate books are not very easy to find and, since it is not a part of the curriculum, not many teachers are prepared to make the effort. However, since one of the main aims of the EFL instruction should not only be mere language teaching, but also cherishing an interest for it, including authentic unabridged books should be the first step into that direction.
