Picture books with pre-school children
The potentials and advantages of using picture books with very young learners of English are considered, and specific activities are suggested and analysed. Picture books can be used with pre-school children learning English to introduce new concepts and new vocabulary items (colour, size, numbers), as a visual stimulus, etc. Due to the repetitive patterns often present in picture books, they facilitate learning of new words, simple sentences or phrases and help children become aware of the English sounds and patterns. Children need to be active all the time: before, during and after the story: they may predict what the story might be about, listen and repeat, mime, sequence the pictures, make their own picture book, draw a scene, etc. Another advantage of sharing picture books with very young learners is the atmosphere of involvement and togetherness, which helps them participate and internalize various elements of English as a foreign language.
