Electrocatalytic Behaviour of Sputter-deposited Ni-W Films for Hydrogen Evolution
Binary Ni-W (5-25 at % W) alloy coatings (250-310 nm) with good adhesion to alumina ceramic have been prepared by dc magnetron sputtering codeposition method. The obtained films exhibit microcrystalline structure in the examined composition range. Their catalytic properties for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) have been investigated in an alkaline electrolyte solution. The kinetic parameters deduced from linear polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements indicated outstandingly high electrocatalytic activity of Ni-W films. The main factor influencing the performance of the Ni-W electrodes as a cathode material in terms of hydrogen evolution in an alkaline solution has been discussed on the basis of intrisic activity of materials as well as the synergistic electronic effects.
