Croatian as foreign, second and heritage language
Second language acquisition, although often viewed as unique process for all, differs between groups of learners. Previous language experience, language status of target language, motivation and other factors influence the language learning process so that it can be viewed as foreign language, as second language and as heritage language learning. Difference between groups is especially noticeable when comparing them in formal settings, such as language courses, language school or any other type of instructional teaching. The paper deals with speakers/learners of Croatian, as an example of small, less-widely thought language. The linguistic, sociolinguistic and motivational difference between three groups of learners (foreign language vs. second language vs. heritage language), will be shown together with the influence they have on learners' language knowledge. Any further formal language learning and language teaching must recognize those differences in order to create a suitable program for each group and each learner.
