Church-State relations in Croatia according to catholic weekly magazine “ Glas Koncila”

In transitional period in Croatia, like in many other post-communist states, we can observe the process of revitalization of religion and its strong public manifestations. In the case of Croatia the Catholic Church has, unlike other religious communities, a specific position in terms of dominance and majority (according to the 2001 census 87, 83% of Croatian population are Catholics). Moreover, in 1996-1998 Croatia signed four Agreements with the Holy See (on legal questions, spiritual care in military and police forces, co-operation in the field of education and culture, and economic issues) before any other religious community signed their own Agreements with the state. Through the method of content analysis of the catholic weekly magazine “ Glas Koncila” (The Council’ s Voice) this paper investigates presentation of their attitudes towards: (1) Church-State relations, (2) social and political themes, and (3) “ Croatian national themes” . Four periods that represents the dates of great social and political importance for Croatia as a state will be analyzed for 6 months each. Preliminary results concerning Church-State relations will be presented.
