HEAVY METAL PARTITIONING IN SOIL PROFILES FROM THE VINE GROWING REGIONS
Investigation of the distribution pattern of total heavy metal concentrations in six soil profiles (Arenic Anthrosols and Calcaric Regosols) and the possibility of their downward movement was carried out in two vine-growing subregions of the continental part of Croatia, in the vicinity of the Croatian capital of Zagreb. The speciation of Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn and their distribution within five operationally defined soil fractions have been studied as well. Five metal fractions were separated in soil samples from 10-cm profile layers. The metal distribution in soil was evaluated using the selective sequential dissolution procedure developed by Tessier et al. (1979). Multi-elemental analyses in soil extracts were performed by ICP-OES (Vista MPX AX, Varian). Concentrations of lithogenous metals in vineyard soils cannot be ascribed to natural processes only ; down-the-slope redistribution processes depend on the manner of land use and cultivation, and eroded material can accumulate in the conditions that will increase the mobility and toxicity of these elements.
