The Iconography of the Dioscuri on a Sarcophagus from Siscia
Analysed is a peculiar and unparalleled iconography of the depiction of the Dioscuri on a sarcophagus from Siscia (first half of the 3rd century). The peculiarity from the fact that instead of the common weapons the youths each carry a standard of the vexillum type. An iconological analysis of the all of components of the picture establishes their respective association with the Imperial cult. The fact that the sarcophagus' owner was an augustalis correspondes with the atitude read into the picture of the Dioscuri holding vexilla, that namely not the idea of the profession or the wealth of an augustalis was shown, but religios role and social status.
