Intraoperative frozen analyses in pathology of the central nervous system and pituitary gland
Intraoperative frozen biopsies continue to play an important role in rapid diagnosis of the central nervous system (CNS) and pituitary gland tumors and lesions despite sophisticated pre-operative imaging techniques. Purpose of this work was to study the frequency and accuracy of intraoperative frozen section in CNS and pituitary gland region tumors and lesions during the period from 1998 to 2004. Total number of CNS frozen sections in the analyzed period was 1385 (45.3% of all CNS biopsies), while total number of pituitary gland frozen sections was 122 (47.3% of all pituitary sections). Accuracy rate of intraoperative frozen diagnosis is 92.4% for CNS and 95.9% for the pituitary gland. These results prove reliability of intraoperative frozen sections in neurosurgery.
