Temperature Dependence of Polarized Low Frequency Raman Spectra of Aminopropylsilanetriol Polymer

Aminopropylsilanetriol (APST) is an organosilane coupling agent which can adsorb on different surfaces like optical fibers, nanoparticals, semiconducting or metal materials. These molecules are forming chemical bonds with the surface of substrate changing thus their mechanical, optical or electrical properties. The nature of the bonds between the APST and the substrate as well as the bonds between APST molecules depends greatly on the polymerization conditions. Many organosilane coupling agents during condensation process are forming silanol groups which can combine to form siloxane linkage between two silane molecules, or can form bonds between the substrate and the silanes. On the other hand, amino groups can form very strong hydrogen bonds with silanols, and are also very important in the process of surface adhesion. Vibrational spectroscopy is a very powerful tool in investigating the nature of interactions between APST and various substrates. We studied the polymerized structure of APST deposited on plastic, teflon, glass, brass and silicon. Ladder structure was detected in the samples deposited on PVC and teflon surface. In the low frequency Raman spectra of these samples a very strong boson peak with maximum at around 40 cm– 1 was detected. The temperature dependence of those spectra down to 10 K was measured. The boson peak is permanently present with appreciable changes only in its intensity. Polarized Raman spectra reveal that the sample has aligned ladder structure oriented parallel to the plane of growth.
