Analysis and occurrence of emerging contaminants in croatian wastewaters - current status and some trends

The regular monitoring activities in Croatia encompass only a small number of possible priority pollutants, while most of the collected data were never adequately published in the open literature. Only few reports were published on the unregulated emerging contaminants, dealing mainly with surfactant-derived endocrine-disrupting alkylphenolic compounds and some pharmaceuticals. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of some emerging contaminants in Croatian municipal wastewaters and treated effluents using highly specific analytical methods with a special emphasis on the assessment of aromatic surfactants and antimicrobials as an important class of pharmaceutical chemicals.
