Filler-matrix adhesion
The term composite is applying to the material with interfaces. On the other hand an understanding of interface is central to the science of adhesion. An increased understanding of adhesion science enable engineers to develop ways in which interfacial region can be modified in order to effect significant changes in properties. The most of the investigations that connect adhesion and composites are based on the adsorption theory of adhesion. The dispersion and polar forces determine the interactions between two phases i.e. the matrix and filler. The surface energy of filler and matrix are important for the adhesion properties in composites. By calculation the surface free energy of the composite components from the contact angle, IGC or other measurements, the adhesion parameters could be estimated and controlled if necessary, for a certain applications.
