Input and behaviour of alkylphenolic endocrine-disrupting contaminants in a stratified estuary and coastal waters
Endocrine-disrupting alkylphenolic compounds, are ubiquitous contaminants in municipal wastewaters and, consequently, can be found in all estuarine and coastal waters. At present, it seems that their concentrations in the water column of Croatian coastal waters are rather low and should not pose a direct threat to the fish populations. However, a special attention should be paid to estuarine boundaries, where the concentration of the most toxic metabolites can be an order of magnitude higher than in the bulk of the water column. Since estuarine interfaces represent sites of intensive biological activity, enhanced exposure concentrations in these compartments can be of major environmental concern.
