Vocabulary explanations in teaching English as a foreign language
The aim of the thesis is to discover explanatory techniques EFL teachers use for introducing new lexical items. The theoretical part provides analysis of historical and contemporary perspective of vocabulary teaching, gives insight into different aspect of explaining new lexical items and analyses the role of the mother tongue. The practical part presents analysis of the discovered explanatory techniques (analysed and discussed results are obtained by a research conducted in Croatian elementary schools). This part also includes a questionnaire designed and analysed to discover learners' attitudes towards the most frequently used explanatory techniques.
