Preparation and Properties of PVAc/CaCO3 Nanocomposites
Unique properties of nanocomposite materials are the consequence of the specific structure, in which the higher amount of polymer matrix is under the influence of nano-sized particles. Nanocomposite structure is difficult to obtain, because nanoparticles show high tendency to agglomerate what disables homogeneous distribution of particles in matrix. In this study PVAc/CaCO3 nanocomposites were prepared by emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) in a presence of different amount of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) nanofiller (20 nm). The effects of the addition of CaCO3 nanofiller on the dispersion, interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of PVAc nanocomposites were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis and mechanical tests. The results show that the CaCO3 is dispersed homogeneously in the PVAc matrix what also confirmed a high transparency of composite films. The improvements of mechanical and thermal properties were correlated with obtained composite structure.
