Wear of boronising layer in aggressive media
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the resistance of boronising layer in erosion and corrosion environment. In investigation, folowing specimens had been used ; carbon (Ck 15 and Ck 45) and low alloy steels (42CrMo4 and 90MnV8). The boronising was carried out in a solid mixture of (KBrO4). Boronising time was 60, 180 and 300 minutes on 950 oC. On boronised specimens defferent thickness were measured from 45 micrometers after 60 minutes over 60-75 micrometers after 180 minutes till 100 micrometers after 300 minutes. Boronised specimens were exposed to erosion, corrosion and erosion-corrosion media. Testing suspensions were salt spray, silicate sand and water emulsion. Duration of testing was 24, 48 and 72 hour on indoor temperature. Results have been analysed by gravimetric method. Through metallographic examinations material structure before boronising, boronising layer structure and surface wear were determined. Achived material construction properties before and after testing in aggresive media were analysed through mechanical examination. Wear of boronising layer depends on material structure and erosion/corrosion synenergy of aggresive media. Metallographic and mechanical examination show that hard boronising layer (1750 HV) on less hard base (240 HV) is not appropriate for reinforce mechanical loadings. Achieved results show the base properties and corrosion resistance can be improved through boronising.
