Irrigation in Sustainable Agriculture in the Danubian Region of Croatia
Croatian part of the Danube river basin is predominantly an agricultural region with good climatic and agricultural condition and with crop production without irrigation. Although irrigation has been implemented onto an area of approximately 1.000 ha, possibilities and necessities are much higher. Through exchange in land ownership (small individual properties) and changes in type of crop production (vegetables, fruits, industrial crops, livestock crops, seed production) there is ever more and more implementation of irrigation in crop production. With construction of big water engineering system as the canal Danube-Sava, it will be possible to irrigate approximately 35.700 ha of agricultural land with no, minor or major, activities necessary for irrigated crop production and by using sustainable principles and acceptable crop production in this area.
