METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH TO SELECTION OF TRAFFIC BRANCHES IN A SUBURBAN AREA OF LARGE CITIES
Development of large cities, such as Zagreb, witch has population of around 800 000, leads to rapidly development of satellite cities. Zagreb with satellite cities has population more than a million. Such expansion has as an effect an increase in the number of daily migrants-suburban passengers. Continuous increase of traffic on roadways, already heavily strained, within the city area leads to traffic jams and gridlocks, increase in travel time, pollution and the overall deterioration of the quality of transport services. One of the more rational solutions to the transport problem with high passenger's volume is introduction and utilization of rail transport, which presupposes optimization of existing capacities and development of new ones where necessary. The theoretical assumptions put forward in this paper will be corroborated by the example of suburban passenger transport between Zagreb and Samobor.
