Sound rhythm effects on cardiac parameters
The aim of this study was to find out effects of simple sound rhythms on cardiac parameters of listeners. The rhythms used differed in tempo and intensity, while changes in cardiac parameters (R-R intervals and their variability) were used to assess the effects on the subjects. Experimental design was 3 x 2 within groups factorial experiment. Three different levels of tempo (60, 200 and 400 BPMs), and two intensity levels (50 and 100 dB) were used. Eleven subjects participated in the experiment, where six experimental situations, interpolated with silence situations, were rotated according to Latin square principle. Complex effects of different situations were found on cardiac parameters, with increases of R-R intervals in the sequence of situations, both experimental and control (silence). When these sequential effects were taken out by the use of linear regression, rhythm effects on cardiac parameters were obtained, with a tendency of an increase in R-R intervals, which was more prominent during listening louder and slower rhythms.
