Influence of constructional parameters and colour values on ultraviolet protection factor of woven fabrics

Skin cancer is increasing worldwide and exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), especially UVA and UVB, is thought to be the most important risk factor. With increasing levels of solar UVR and evidence that exposure to UVR contributes to photo ageing as well, protection of the skin is imperative during exposure to the sun. The aim of the research was the evaluation of the influence of constructional parameters and colour on the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) of multicolour woven fabric. With the help of changes in weave and thread's density the effect of woven construction was analysed. The study of warp and weft interlacing and their floats was also included. With different colours in warp and weft system different colour mixtures were prepared and different fractions of colour components (warp, weft and space between threads) were achieved. The results of the research point out the importance of adequate planning of woven construction, when the UPF has to be within certain limits values. The design of woven structure must include at least a theoretical prediction of cover factors of all colour components on woven surface. On the other hand, colour values and reflectance of warp, weft and foundation (colour components) have to be accurately taken into consideration.
