Performance comparison between wire coil and twisted tape inserts

This work presents experimental information for single-phase forced convection of air in smooth as well as wire coil and twisted tape inserted tubes. The characteristic tested parameters of the inserted tubes are: length of the tested inserts L (300, 600 and 1200 mm) and position of the tested inserts in the smooth tube x (321 up to 2186 mm) measured from the outlet of the smooth tube. The total length of the smooth tube is about 3000 mm. All tests are performed in a turbulent regime. The variation range of the Reynolds numbers is 7700 up to 19000. Significantly higher inside heat transfer and friction factor coefficients than those of the smooth tube under same operating conditions have been observed. The performance of these wire coil and twisted tape inserted tubes has been evaluated by three different criteria based on the objectives of maximizing heat transfer rate, minimizing heat exchanger size and minimizing pumping power.
