Phacoemulsification and non-penetrating deep sclerectomy: a one site vs a two site approach
Objective: To analyze outcomes of combined phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation with non-penetrating deep sclerectomy with respect to one site vs. a two site approach. Methods: This prospective study involved 18 eyes of 9 patients with combined cataract and various types of glaucoma. Each patient underwent a combined procedure: a one site approach at 12 o'clock for one eye and a two site procedure (deep sclerectomy on the 11 o'clock and cataract on the 2 o'clock) for the second eye. All surgeries were performed by single surgeron (MZ). The effect of the surgery and number of glaucoma medications as well as the complications were recorded. Results: Preoperatively all eyes were on antiglaucoma medications. Mean preoperative intraocular pressure was similar in both groups. In the one site group the values for the mean intraocular pressure were 25.5± ; 3.9 mmHg and 24.8± ; 4.4 mmHg in the two site group. There was no statistically significant difference in intraocular pressure decrease between the one site group (14.4± ; 3.8 mmHg) and two site group (14.8± ; 3.4 mmHg). There were no serious pre or postoperative complications in both groups. Conclusions: Phacoemulsification with non-penetrating deep sclerectomy is safe and effective in both one site as well as in two site approach.
