Residual Stresses Caused by Shrinking in Multibody Polymer Models
Shrinking of homogeneous polymers due to irradiation in a homogeneous gamma-radiation field is accompanied by a homogeneous deformation. However, in certain boundary conditions or in complex models consisting of different parts with different shrinking abilities, residual stresses may occur as the result of this process. In transparent optical active polymers this phenomenon can be studied photo elastically. In this paper a simple calibration experiment is carried out to determine the dependence of the resulting residual stresses. In addition, this process can be modelled numerically using different thermal extendibility of different parts of a complex model.
