Sažetak
The climate of the Adriatic coast and islands of Croatia is Mediterranean with relatively enough annual precipitation amounts (700-1000 mm) along the coast. However, difficulties in water supply and water management exist in the summer months due to the soil with karst porous base and unequal annual distribution of precipitation amount which makes the mid-Adriatic coast and islands the driest region in Croatia. In order to establish the secular variations of the water balance components in this area, the Palmer method (one of the methods for the calculation of the mean monthly values of the water balance components) and linear trends have been applied to the Hvar meteorological station situated on the mid-Adriatic island of Hvar. The Hvar station was established in March 1858 and has the longest time series of observations in the Adriatic area. According to linear trend analyses and the nonparametric Mann-Kendall rank test at the 0.05 confidence level, the existence of a significant trend of annual precipitation amount and air temperature has been established. The relative humidity series has the slight negative but insignificant trend. The increase in temperature is reflected in increase of the potential evapotranspiration. A tendency towards a decrease in precipitation amount causes a decrease in actual evapotranspiration and moisture loss from the soil. It is shown that the combined influence of the significant linear trend in precipitation and air temperature affected the significant changes in soil water content and runoff. The lower soil water content could have unfavourable consequences on vegetation and agricultural production while dramatic decrease in runoff could have harmful impact on water management.
