Adventage of mediterranean diet to the continental dietary habits and their relation to mortality rates for acute myocardial infarction and CVI in Croatia

Mortality rates for acute myocardial infarction and CVI in two regions in Croatia, continenta,l and costal region , have been compared to the dietary habits data in selected populations. dietary habits and food consumption survey of tested populations from the mentioned regions revealed significant differences regarding consumption of main dietary nutrients. Major sources of fat, proteins, carbohydrates and other nutrients data differ in both regions. Higher mortality rates in continental part of country could be strongly associated and influenced by dietary factors such as high protein intake-mostly of animal origin, higher intake of fats-mostly saturated, lower intake of vitamins A and c and lower intake of dietary fibers in comparison to the dietary habits and mortality rates for acute myocardial infarction and CVI in southern region. In both surveyed regions alcohol consumption as a source of energy procentually did not significantly differ in contribution, while the type of alcohol drinks consumed were different. Continental population consumed bear, white wine and spirits while on contrary southern population consumed mainly red wines.
