Characteristics of Croatian Urban Tourism - Current State and Perspectives
Cities, where the majority of world population live, are nowadays the strongest generators of tourist flow and very attractive tourist destinations. Some authors point out that ‘ ’ due to its cause, place of origin and significant, tourism is essentially an urban phenomena’ ’ (Alfier 1977). Urban tourism was one of the earliest forms of tourism. During the 18th century privileged young Englishmen often filled their time between a university education and the beginning of a career with the Grand tour to the cities in continental Europe. During last two centuries there was a major shift from this kind of tourism to coastal, rural or mountain destinations. Therefore, urban tourism is not a new kind of tourism, but one that is re-emerging and growing. By the time cities have changed their functions. Some vital functions have been abandoned and new ones developed. Today strategic choice of many towns looking to improve their economies has been to developed tourism base on their historic or contemporary heritage, gastronomy, art, culture, popular traditions, events and attractions. These are all resources that can provide a wide range of tourist attractions in the cities.
